****** Engakuji ******
When you come from Tokyo by JR Yokosuka Line, get off the train at Kitakamakura. Go along the new road, and make a left here to enter Engakuji.(You are at red point on the Map.)
Engakuji was founded in 1282 to mourn soldiers in wars with Mongol* by Hojo Tokimune. The first chief priest was Mugakusogen who was invited form China. When he came to Kamakura, Spirit of Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine appeared as a white heron and showed the way to this place. JR Yokosuka Line runs between this pond and the other part of the temple.
*:Mongol invaded Japan twice, in 1274 and in 1281.
This big gate is called "San mon"-the symbol of the temple.
Byakurokudo is a small cave (left). When Mugakusogen was preaching white deer were listening to him too. The deer came out of the cave. Inside the cave is rather narrow (photo). Where did the deer come out?
Myokochi is a pond made by Musokokushi in 1335. There are a lot of turtles in the pond and you may see a turtle on other turtles basking in the sun.
